Horses and Their Personalities: As horse lovers, we appreciate all of these beautiful creatures for their individual personalities and strengths. Horses are just as diverse and unique as we are. Generally speaking, we divide horse breeds into three categories based on breed: hot-blooded, cold-blooded, and warm-blooded. Of course, horses are mammals so they are all technically warm-blooded animals. These are just terms that we use to describe their general demeanor and personalities. All three types are the result of generations and generations of breeding for different, specific purposes in different regions. Read on to learn more about the different types of horses!

Hot-blooded

Hot blooded horses are generally descendants of breeds that come from the Middle East, and have been bred for speed, agility, and intelligence. Hot blooded horses are often high strung and may seem nervous because they are so energetic. Their energy is what makes them such great racers! It can be challenging to work with hot blooded horses, as it can be difficult to get them to focus and follow commands, and this intimidates many new riders. Once you and the horse have formed a relationship, however, hot blooded horses can be very successful at racing and other activities. Some of the most common hot blooded breeds are Thoroughbreds and Arabian.

Cold-blooded

Cold-blooded horses are mostly descendants of European horses, who were mostly bred for farm work. They tend to have more of a mellow demeanor and sturdy, muscular builds. These features make them less apt for long term endurance, but are very beneficial for agricultural labor such as plowing. Their gentle, easy going nature is a lot less intimidating for new riders, so many people who are new to interacting with horses are often drawn to cold blooded breeds. Some examples of common cold blooded breeds are Clydesdales, Shires, and Percherons.

Warm-blooded

Today, warm blooded horses are the most common type of horses, and they possess a combination of hot-blooded and cold-blooded qualities as a result of the cross breeding. Warm-blooded horses generally have a calm demeanor when at rest, but they are also able to exert energy when necessary. This versatility allows them to be successful in a lot of different events and tasks, and warm-blooded horses can make great companions. Some common examples of warm-blooded breeds are the Quarter Horse, Friesian, and Appaloosa.
