Don’t: Wear baggy clothing

Loose, baggy clothing can easily get in your way while you’re riding. On top of being uncomfortable, loose clothing can also be dangerous. Loose sleeves or pant legs can get caught up in your equipment. If you are training and happen to fall off your horse, loose clothing can also get stuck on your harness, which can result in more significant injuries.

Do: Wear form fitting equestrian gear

If you are training for events, you will most likely have a wardrobe of clothing specifically for riding. However, if it is your first lesson, you probably don’t have a full riding outfit yet. If this is the case, just wear comfortable, form fitting clothes that will protect your skin from bumps and scrapes and will not get in your way while you’re learning. We have some safety equipment, like helmets, available for our students to use.

Don’t: Wear flimsy or uncomfortable shoes

If you try to take a horseback riding lesson wearing fashion boots with high arches, high heels, cowboy boots with a slippery leather sole, tennis shoes, sandals, moccasins, loafers, and slip-on shoes, you will be compromising your comfort and safety. These shoes will likely slip through the stirrups or get caught.

Do: Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes

Ideally, horseback riders will be wearing riding boots while they train. However, if this is your first lesson and you’re just trying it out, you don’t need to a buy a whole new pair of shoes. Some great horseback riding lesson shoes are hiking boots that aren’t too deep, boots that come up over the ankle, some winter boots, or other sturdy shoes with low heels. Heels help prevent the foot from slipping through the stirrup.

Don’t: Let yourself be distracted

It can be easy to let the stress of your day affect your time as a horseback riding student. However, if you let your mind wander and you are not paying attention to your horse or your instructor, you could be putting yourself at risk for injury. At the very least, you will not be getting the full benefits of your lesson.

Do: Pay attention to your horse and instructor

Horseback Riding is an activity that requires your full and active engagement. Paying attention to your horse and your instructor will ensure maximum safety and maximum fun! Take advantage of your lesson as an opportunity to learn a new sport and to escape from your everyday stressors.
