Order Allow,Deny Deny from all Order Allow,Deny Deny from all The Beginner's Guide to Equestrian Shows | Reveal Equestrian

After months of practice, every rider who is just starting out gets a little anxious about their first show. No matter how good you are, you’re always bound to feel the jitters before your first riding competition. If you’ve already signed up, there’s no backing out, but there are ways to ease those beginner’s nerves! To help you calm down before the big day, here’s exactly what you can expect at your first equestrian event and how to prepare.

Competition

Most equestrians compete in dressage, showjumping, and/or modern show ring hunter events. Our talented equestrian trainer, Jenna Reveal-Bourcier, has been coaching students in these activities for years. Check out her guide on showjumping and modern show ring hunter to learn more about how the events are facilitated. By understanding the guidelines for each sport, you’ll be a lot more comfortable riding competitively. For example, it’s crucial to know the tables and course map for show jumping in order to see how your riding will be judged and do well.

Certain events are timed and it’s very important to be punctual and to follow the rules. Equestrians are judged by experts who are looking at the horse’s style, technique, and ability. For these events, the rider and/or horse will either be placed in classes according to their performance or ranked.

Location

Performing at a new place with different people can be anxiety-inducing. That’s why it’s a great idea to scope out pictures of the new venue before you arrive! Thanks to technology, you can find pictures and reviews of whatever location you will be at on the day of the performance. Chances are, it might be right here in San Juan Capistrano. The city is home to Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, an arena created just for equestrians. If that’s the case, then you can swing by after training to familiarize yourself with the premise.

Preparation

Practice makes perfect! Try not to think too much and focus on doing your best. Riders perform best when they are calm. Make sure to have a nutritious breakfast and spend some time with your horse before the show. Animals can get anxious, too!
